On June 28th the party will arrive to Barcelona! It’s the 10th anniversary of Pride Barcelona!! Every summer since 2008, Barcelona has been hosting one of the biggest celebrations of the LGTBI community in the Mediterranean. And the party continues until July 9th! Welcome to Pride Barcelona 2017!
LGBT pride is the positive stand against discrimination and violence toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. The community also wants to promote self-affirmation, dignity, equality rights. This increases their visibility as a social group, build community, and celebrate sexual diversity and gender variance. Pride, as opposed to shame and social stigma, is the predominant outlook that bolsters most LGBT rights movements throughout the world. Pride has lent its name to LGBT-themed organizations, institutes, foundations, book titles, periodicals and even a cable TV station and the Pride Library.
Actually, one of the biggest prides around the world is in Madrid. They usually have an assistance of more than 3,000,000 visitants. However, Barcelona’s Pride is becoming more and more popular each year. They are one of the most popular pride celebrations in Europe with more than 250,000 attendees every year.
This year, the theme is related to the LGTBI phobia in the sports field. They have more than 30 social organizations collaborating in the organization of this year’s event. It’s essential to define and disseminate its content and numerous activities such as lectures, seminars, art exhibitions, live shows… and many other activities!
There will be mainly two areas. The first one will be in Moll de la Fusta, located close to the port. It is one of the symbols of Barcelona Olímpica. This area will hold the Village. Here you will be able to find a large number of activities such as high heels race, a charity gymkhana or the Pride Kids. The second area is called “Gaixample”, which represents the gay district of Barcelona. Here you will find the Street Pride trade, full of party and people enjoying one of the most expected events of the year. Both the Village and Gaixample will be set according to the celebration, full of colorful balloons, rainbow flags and tents.
Pride Barcelona is a party full of love and surprises. In fact, one year we did a Holi Festival as a way to celebrate this week! Holi is a Hindu spring festival celebrated in India and Nepal, also known as the “festival of colors” or the “festival of love“. The festival signifies the victory of good over evil, the arrival of spring, end of winter, and for many a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repair broken relationships. originally from India, in which people throw colored powders that end up coating its participants after they have thrown them at each other. Moreover we will have the famous Fiesta de la Espuma taking place during these days! It’s a party in which a big cannon throws foam at people and they have to dive and throw it while being able to dance.
However, these parties are not the main events of the week. Because the main celebrations are going to be the Pride demonstration and Parade of Barcelona, the most multitudinous event. On July 8th, there will be a pre-parade party in Plaça Espanya at 4pm. So you can head there if you want to wait for the Parade that will commence at 5pm. It will go from Plaça Espanya, all down Paral·el Avenue towards Moll de Fusta
Here we show you a schedule of some of the activities that will take place during the week and that you shouldn’t miss!
