Open-air Cinema

The good weather has arrived and so has the heat, so the majority of us are making plans away from home. A good choice is the cinema but … what if you can have the same experience but outdoors? Here we suggest some of the best open-air cinemas/ cinema a la fresca in Barcelona.

Sala Montjuïc

The most famous event is the Sala Montjuïc. This open-air cinema edition will open with The Next Skin, which won a Goya Award for its protagonist Emma Suárez. This year’s program, which runs from June 30th to August 4th, also includes films such as La La Land, El Renacido, Sportlight or classics such as El Apartamento, as well as other short films and concerts. The films are projected in the gardens of the Santa Eulàlia, next to the castle of Montjuïc and you can either rent a sunbed or bring your own towel. The tickets cost €6.

Cine en la Playa – Barcelona

Another option is to enjoy a movie on the beach. In Barcelona, there are different options within the program Cinema Lliure a la Platja. This program is full of independent cinema. It will be held from June 29th to August 3rd at Playa de San Sebastián (Barceloneta), Prat de Llobregat (Playa del Prat), Badalona (Playa de la Estación) and Mataró (Playa del Callao). It starts around 21:00.

Mecal Air – Festival Internacional de Cortometrajes y Animación de Barcelona

The Mecal Air, in Poble Espanyol is one of the local’s favorites. It has a variety of short films, with a selection of some of the most important shorts of the year. Among them many films were awarded in festivals by the public and critics. Between June and September, always during the weekends. As the programming is extensive, here is the program.

Cine – Parc de l’Espanya Industrial

They have three films dedicated only to the little ones. It will take place inside the Parque de la Industria, also known as Casa del Mig. All films are free and are projected at 9:30 p.m.

Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona

Another summer cinema in Barcelona cannot happen without an event organized by the Contemporary Culture Center of Barcelona in the Pati de les Dones. Each year they choose a theme for the films. They are always attentive to the new trends, because for example the thematic chosen this year are films carried out by women who break stereotypes and do not follow the norm.

Cinema Jove a la fresca

The Casa del Rellotge Civic Center and the Pepita Casanellas Hall are other regular summer movie plan. In the gardens of Can Farrera they usually organize Cinema Jove a la Fresca, free projections during the summer. They start at 22:00.
